According to the 2000 Census report, Sacramento has about 160, 000 housing units in its cities and surrounding areas. Of these, about 94% are occupied. Less than one percent of these residences are used for vacation purposes and there is a five percent rental vacancy for the area.

Housing options include rentals, homes, apartments, and townhouses. Most of the housing is found in the midtown and East Sacramento area. The split between renters and owners is nearly equal, with owners being slightly over fifty percent of the population.

The average household in owner occupied housing is 2.64 members, while renters average 2.5 persons. About 58% of the population is families with 30% having children less than eighteen years of age. Married couples with children are about 38% of the population and those with children under the age of eighteen are 18%.

Single mothers make up 15% of the population; those mothers with children under eighteen are about 9%. Non family households account for the remaining 41%; 32% of this group lives alone and 9% of them are over the age of 65.

The population is mainly females (51%) from the age of 25 to 44 with a diverse mix of cultures and ethnicities: White, African American and Asian are the largest in number.

The median age is 32.8 years and 75% of the population is over eighteen years old.
